Gen. Gary Thomas, the assistant commandant of the Marine Corps, has tested positive for COVID-19, according to the Marines.
Almost all members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff are quarantining at home after Adm. Charles Ray, the vice commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard, tested positive for COVID-19.
Thomas had attended the meeting in place of Gen. David Berger, the Marine Commandant, who was traveling in Europe at the time. The Pentagon's top spokesman said Wednesday evening that none of the other senior military officers had not tested positive for the virus. They were all initially tested on Tuesday morning after having gone into quarantine on Monday evening.
Teleworking has become a regular option at the Pentagon during the coronavirus pandemic, and some of the Joint Chiefs have worked from home at times where they can still have access to classified communications. Berger represented the Marine Corps at that event and then later traveled to Europe. Thomas did not attend the White House event, but sat in at the Friday meeting with the Joint Chiefs while Berger traveled overseas.
