The Seattle Mariners missed the playoffs yet again in 2024, despite having a strong starting pitching rotation. With limited payroll flexibility, the team has yet to make any significant moves in the offseason, despite the AL West being more open than ever.

The Mariners , leading the American League West by 10 games in June, lost the lead to the Houston Astros and missed the playoffs by one game. This marked the fourth consecutive year where their postseason fate was decided in the final week of the regular season. It was also the 22nd time in 23 years that the Mariners failed to make the playoffs.

Adding to the frustration, the Mariners had arguably the best starting pitching rotation in baseball, but their offense led the league in strikeouts (1,625). Fans were disappointed with the 2024 season's results but hoped for optimism during the offseason with expectations of increased payroll. However, this hope was quickly dashed when news broke that the Mariners only had $15-20 million in available payroll. This revelation made it clear that Seattle wouldn't be pursuing top-tier free agents. Chairman John Stanton, once again, maintained a strict payroll limit, keeping the Mariners' spending below their levels from 2016 to 2018. This puts President of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto in a difficult position. While he's made successful moves in the past, the Mariners haven't made any major league transactions yet (other than letting Jorge Polanco and Josh Rojas go). Meanwhile, the AL West is the most competitive it's been in years. The Astros won the division with just 88 wins in 2024, traded Tucker, and might lose Alex Bregman as well. This is the perfect opportunity for the Mariners to capitalize and add some offense. Instead, there's been silence. Frustrated Mariners fans can buy '.540' T-shirts, a reference to Dipoto's infamous comment about winning 54% of their games. There's still time for the Mariners front office to make moves and give fans hope for 2025. However, this fanbase has grown accustomed to watching their franchise miss the playoffs for a significant portion of their existence
