After missing out on Carlos Santana, the Seattle Mariners may need to revisit talks with veteran first baseman Justin Turner.
The Seattle Mariners offseason hasn't gone as planned for fans or the front office. They needed players for second and third base and a first baseman to join Luke Raley. Between December 20-21, potential targets like Paul Goldschmidt, Christian Walker, Josh Naylor, and Carlos Santana all signed elsewhere. While the Mariners offered Santana a potential two-year deal with a player option, he chose a one-year, $12 million deal with the Cleveland Guardians.
This flurry of first base acquisitions leaves Seattle with very few options on the free agent market. However, one familiar veteran they could still pursue is Justin Turner. Seattle acquired Turner near the 2024 trade deadline, and he and Raley formed a solid first base duo. In 48 games with Seattle, Turner hit .264 with five home runs and 24 RBIs. At one point late in the season, Turner had the longest streak of reaching base safely in all of baseball. According to the Seattle Times, Seattle had preliminary discussions with Turner early in the offseason but prioritized acquiring Santana. The Mariners valued Turner's presence in the clubhouse and his willingness to help young hitters. They engaged in preliminary contract talks with him early in the offseason, but shifted their focus to Santana. They may now have to re-engage those talks with Turner. While the story suggests Seattle hasn't yet resumed negotiations with Turner, there's a chance they have tried after Santana's decision. With each passing day without a move, the worry about the Mariners offseason intensifies
