Nicholas Lubitz witnessed the remarkable emetic incident during a three-year project that saw hundreds of marine creatures tagged off the Queensland coast.
The tiger shark was tagged and released as part of a multi-agency project that saw researchers tag more than 800 marine creatures from the Gold Coast to the Torres Strait.More data from the Queensland Marine Telemetry Array project will be available later this year.
He said tiger sharks were scavengers and had been known to eat seabirds, tyres, licence plates and even a small TV screen. Dr Lubitz said he had helped tag about 200 tiger sharks, but this was the first and only time he had seen a shark vomit an echidna.
