Dr. Annie Harvilicz transforms her empty veterinary hospital into a haven for pets displaced by the devastating Los Angeles County wildfires, providing free supplies and temporary housing.
A veterinarian in Marina del Rey has transformed her empty hospital into a 'free pet store,' offering a lifeline to those affected by the devastating Los Angeles County wildfires. The wildfires have ravaged the region, forcing thousands to evacuate and destroying over 12,000 structures. In the face of this immense tragedy, Dr. Annie Harvilicz, a veterinarian and founder of Animal Wellness Centers in Marina del Rey, has mobilized to provide critical support for displaced pets.
When the fires erupted, Harvilicz took to social media, appealing to the community and offering her 'empty old vet hospital' as a sanctuary for animals in need. Her vision was to create a space resembling a pet store, where people could simply drive up, enter, and collect essential supplies for their furry companions free of charge. 'The plan is to make it look kind of like a pet store where you can just pull up, come in, get anything you need for your pet and walk out,' she explained.Beyond offering free pet supplies, Harvilicz has actively taken in animals from both shelters and individuals, providing them with temporary homes while their owners grapple with the aftermath of the disaster. Recognizing the importance of a stable environment for animals, she emphasizes, 'It's better for animals to be in homes. So we've been doing a lot of connecting people who need a temporary place for their pets with people who have housing that they don't mind fostering for a while until people get back on their feet.' Harvilicz's initiative has resonated deeply within the community, with numerous residents stepping forward to offer temporary foster care for displaced pets, including some of Harvilicz's existing clients. The 'free pet store' operates daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 4053 Lincoln Blvd., Marina del Rey
