The first report of giant sunfish remains on a Point Reyes beach emerged via Instagram, where a local Marin feed posted the picture. News outlets picked up the story, expanding it to explain that the 6-foot animal with its deceptively nonhydrodynamic-looking shape was not just your average mola mola sunfish but instead was a rare mola tecta, or hoodwinker sunfish.
This 0.6-mile trail leading to that great ocean offered a few quirks, one of which was a daylight sighting of a skunk foraging in a nearby tangle of shrubs. Another is that this trail is the only one in the Point Reyes National Seashore where dogs are permitted. Based on paw-print evidence in the sands and an encounter with one jubilant black lab on the beach, locals take advantage of this opening. Dogs are to be leashed at all times, which the jubilant black lab was not.
After a mile or so in this direction, we could go no further thanks to the combined obstacles of high tide and a rock outcropping, so we turned around without spying the sunfish. We did see, however, what we took to be a nonbreeding ring-billed gull adult, a gorgeous trio of marbled godwits and whales.
