The younger man stopped because of debris on the trail, and his father, behind him, braked hard and was thrown into some bushes.
A San Rafael man was killed when he was impaled by a stick while dirt biking in the Mendocino National Forest on Sunday.
Rex Brian Powell, 68, and his son were riding separate dirt bikes around 10 a.m. in an off-highway vehicle area at Middle Creek Campground, north of Clear Lake, the Lake County sheriff’s office said. The younger man stopped because of debris on the trail, and his father, behind him, braked hard and was thrown into some bushes, California Highway Patrol Officer Piers Pritt told the Santa Rosa Press Democrat.
Powell landed on a stick that pierced his torso. His son took him to the campground, where emergency responders found he had died of his injury. A request for an air ambulance was canceled.
