Catholics of Marin said the five defendants should face felony charges for defacing and pulling down a statue of Saint Junipero Serra that was in front of Mission San Rafael.
Protesters marched in downtown San Rafael on Tuesday in protest of the district attorneys decision to reduce charges against the suspects who defaced and tore down a statue of Junipero Serra.Marin County District Attorney Lori Frugoli 's decision to reduce charges in a vandalism case led to a protest in downtown San Rafael Tuesday afternoon.
"The statue that was taken down ripped my heart out. This is part of our shared history. I have Native American roots. I'm also born and raised Catholic," said parish member Theresa Brunner. It happened during a gathering held by Coast Miwok of Marin commemorating Indigenous People's day.They said Serra is responsible for the destruction of Native American culture.
