Nathaniel Becker, 42, of Marietta, faces up to 60 years in prison after he was convicted of two counts of possession of an unregistered destructive device and two counts of placement of a destructive device on a vessel.

Pipe bombs were found on two tugboats on Oct. 21 and Oct. 25, 2021, the Justice Department says. Investigators say Becker was seen on security video purchasing pipes and other bomb components from a Lowe’s store in Marietta on four separate occasions near the dates when the devices were found.

Around the time of the first incident, exterior security video from Lowe’s and a Walmart in Marietta showed Becker carrying pipe-bomb components toward an Ohio River bridge. Investigators believe the pipe bombs were dropped from the bridge onto the tugboats. Similar devices were discovered on a third tugboat moving barges on the river on Oct. 26, but they contained non-explosive septic-tank cleaner and Becker was not charged, according to the Justice Department.

Becker was convicted in August 2020 in Washington County, Ohio, or failure to comply with an order or signal of a police officer and still was on probation in October 2021. Becker reportedly threatened a police officer with a knife during a traffic stop and then led police on a car chase before barricading himself in his residence. Becker was arrested after a standoff that ended when police forced entry into the home.
