Maricopa County Recorder Justin Heap has initiated the removal of over 240,000 individuals from the voter registration list, citing the need to ensure accurate and up-to-date voter information.

Maricopa County Recorder Justin Heap announced on January 21st that he had approved the removal of hundreds of thousands of individuals from the county's voter registration list. Heap stated, 'I promised to make cleaning the voter rolls a Day One priority in this office, and we’re taking swift action to deliver on that promise.' According to Heap's official statement, a total of 242,565 people were removed from the voter registration list.

Heap indicated that these individuals had previously been placed on a list of inactive voters and were given multiple notices to update their voter registration information. They failed to respond either for four years or 'through the date of the second general election for federal office following the date of the notice from the county recorder that was sent.' Heap emphasized that this is the first of many steps his office will take in the coming months and years to ensure the full restoration of trust in the electorate within Maricopa County. The Recorder's Office website states that a significant number of individuals have been removed from voter rolls from 2021 to 2024. They utilize various reporting systems to verify and update voter information, including state DMV records, federal death records, and military records. The office clarifies that voters must update their registration if they move, change their name, or wish to alter their political affiliation. Voters can verify their voter registration status on the Arizona Secretary of State's website
