Mariano and Clara Rivera vehemently deny these allegations, stating that they first learned of them in 2022, four years after the alleged incident. Their attorney, Joseph A. Ruta, emphasized that the Riveras have never tolerated child abuse and that the lawsuit contains inaccuracies and misleading statements. The lawsuit, filed by a woman identified as 'Jane Doe,' alleges sexual abuse by another minor, 'MG,' during a summer internship at the Ignite Life Center in Gainesville, Florida, affiliated with Rivera's church. 'Jane Doe' claims her mother informed Clara Rivera about the abuse, and Clara promised to investigate. However, the suit alleges that the Riveras covered up the abuse rather than taking action to stop it. The lawsuit further claims that MG abused 'Jane Doe' at the Rivera residence in Rye, New York, during a barbecue. It accuses Mariano Rivera of knowing or should have known about MG's potential risk to sexually abuse children. The lawsuit seeks financial damages from the Riveras, alleging their failure to act on reported incidents. Mariano Rivera, considered one of the greatest closers in baseball history, has a remarkable record of 652 saves and a 2.21 ERA. He was unanimously elected into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2019 and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Donald Trump that same year.
