Even a collaboration with Billy Ray Cyrus on a remix of the track fared no better, thought it certainly raised the profile of the song and the artist.
Complicating matters further for both the country music and hip-hop genres, Lil Nas X came out as gay in June. Both genres have had their perceived struggles accepting and embracing people from the LGBTQ+ community. Nevertheless, through all of these developments, "Old Town Road" just continued soaring.
Strategically, Lil Nas X released several remixes along the way, including last week's "Seoul Town Road" with J-Pop phenomenon BTS member RM. If a remix doesn't stray too far from the original, Billboard combines its data with the original track when determining rankings on its various charts, so Lil Nas X's remix efforts could certainly be argued to have helped him achieve this record.
As a Spanish-language track, it's remarkable that "Despacito" was able to show such staying power. It was the first Spanish-language track since the "Macarena" to have that kind of impact on the predominantly English Hot 100. "Despacito" did even better on the Latin chart, staying at number one for an epic 56 weeks.
For now, Lil Nas X sits alone atop the heap with the longest consecutive run atop the Billboard Hot 100. Now it's just a question of whether or not he'll extend his lead and stick around 18 weeks or more. Only time will tell.
