The fires have burned over 27,000 acres, destroyed more than 10,000 structures, and tragically claimed multiple lives, according to local officials.
Shriver highlighted the concerns raised by LA Fire Chief Kristin Crowley, who publicly expressed the dire need for additional resources and staffing to combat the ever-increasing threat of wildfires. Crowley emphasized that the LA Fire Department (LAFD) has been chronically understaffed, under-resourced, and underfunded for the past three years, warning that these cuts could have catastrophic consequences for public safety. She stated that she had repeatedly alerted authorities about the potential dangers of these budgetary constraints but her warnings were seemingly ignored. Shriver, known for her political activism and past support for Democratic candidates, echoed Crowley's sentiments, asserting that California's future 'has to be different.' She criticized the status quo, stating that 'LA cannot go forward with the status quo. LA is no longer what it was. It has to be different. It has to prioritize the safety of its citizens, police, fire, schools. LA residents deserve better.' Shriver also expressed her disappointment with Mayor Karen Bass, who faced public criticism for her trip to Ghana during the initial stages of the wildfire crisis.
