Marco Zanini on why—and how—he’s still working despite Italy’s major coronavirus shutdown, with no factory visits, no travel, and no fittings.
has set in place are, I think, super admirable. Everything is confusing and disorientating enough already for all of us, so this lockdown has been a call to everyone to do their duty and be disciplined. But of course, on a daily basis, it makes work more complicated, even if everyone is willing to find new ways to do so. We aren’t even figuring it out day by day; it’s more hour by hour.
Instead it’s a constant process of considering how to move forward as every day brings new changes and challenges; to find ways to interact with the pattern makers, cutters, all the people who contribute to the making of my collection. To not be able to be in front of the garments, see how they’re being sewn, how something fits and falls on the body; how do we continue to work as a team? Because fashion, my fashion, is about the craft. You need to be close, physically, to the people making it.
And to help with the deliveries [of my label], I had decided I would show next spring to the buyers this June, instead of in September. Will I still be able to? I don’t know. Will the buyers even come to Milan in late May, or June? Who knows. It makes me think that the whole fashion system needs to change. We need a reorganization of the fashion calendar.
