MAPPED: The parts of Manchester that are 'more than three degrees warmer' on hot days
An alarming map of Manchester has revealed which places are 'more than three degrees warmer' on the hottest days, according to a campaign group. The map shows which parts of the city benefit from trees and green spaces.
The isolated green spaces at Whitworth Park and Annie Lees Playing Fields appear as spots of cool blue. But towards the northern and eastern parts of the city where more green spaces and trees are, the picture is quite different. The environmental group also claims that marginalised communities are most impacted by the climate crisis. It says that people of colour make up 65 pc of neighbourhoods with the least cooling while people living on lower incomes are disproportionately affected by a lack of natural cooling near their homes.
Manchester councillor Tracey Rawlins, who is the executive member for environment and transport, said: "We understand the benefits of increasing access to green spaces for our residents not just in terms of their health and wellbeing and in helping to improve and enhance our urban biodiversity but also the associated benefits that these green spaces bring to the climate change agenda.
