Maple Leafs fall to Steven Stamkos and the Lightning in the final home game of the regular season Globe_Sports

Tampa Bay Lightning forward Steven Stamkos works the puck around Auston Matthews of the Maple Leafs during a game at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto on April 4, 2019.The game didn’t mean anything as far as the NHL standings were concerned and most of the participants played like it.

Stamkos and linemates Ondrej Palat and Tyler Johnson dominated the Leafs at the start of the game but it was Marner who broke through for the game’s first goal. However, both of them traded great glove saves over the rest of the first period. Andersen made the first one after Kucherov made a great move to get around Tavares with the puck and then pass it back to defenceman Mikhail Sergachev at the top of the left faceoff circle. Sergachev got off a solid shot but it was snapped up by Andersen with his catching glove.

The uneven pace of the game should not have been a surprise, as neither team tried very hard to convince anyone that it meant anything other than a tune-up for next week’s playoffs. The most notable thing about the game going into it for the Leafs was it marked the return of defenceman Jake Gardiner after an 18-game absence due to back problems.
