“An expansive dome of unusually hot temperatures for mid-March will engulf much of the West,“ the Weather Prediction Center warned.
Forecast maps shared by meteorologists show where multiple temperature records are set to be broken as an unusually early heat wave is expected to engulf the western U.S. this week. In a Sunday update, the National Weather Service's Weather Prediction Center said daytime highs were forecast to run 20 to 30 degrees above typical levels, with temperatures climbing well into the 90s and triple digits.
"Dozens of daily high temperature records are expected, and many locations are likely to set both all-time high temperatures for the month of March and their earliest 100-degree temperature on record," the agency said. The WPC warned that because the heat is arriving early in the year and is expected to last several days, the will increase as temperatures peak later this week. With many people not yet acclimated to seasonal heat, vulnerable groups could face a higher likelihood of heat‑related illness, it said., causing rivers to swell and currents to become faster.
