Boil water advisories were in place for several cities across the United States on Wednesday.The advisories were due to main breaks and other operational disruptions to the cities' waterworks departments. Under a boil water advisory, residents in the effected area are urged not to use their tap water for consumption, including for drinking, brushing teeth or washing food or dishes.
Residences under the advisory should boil their water for at least one minute before using for drinking or food preparation, according to a release from the state's health department. If tap water 'appears dirty, flush the water lines by letting the water run until it clears.'If using to disinfect dishes and food contact surfaces, tap water can also be disinfected by using one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon, read the release.
