Take a look at all the reported Cruise, Waymo, Zoox and other robotaxi crashes in The City
San Francisco has become the world’s testing ground for autonomous-vehicles. But as companies such as Cruise, Waymo and Zoox have increased the number of self-driving car on city streets, the number of crashes involving those cars is also on the rise.
Autonomous-vehicle companies claim their cars are safer than those with people behind the wheel, but their many detractors, which include several San Francisco leaders, argue the technology isn’t ready to be fully deployed. Despite the concerns, the California Public Utilities Commission in August granted Cruise and Waymo permission to deploy and charge for autonomous rides 24/7 across every corner of The City.
But after a string of accidents, state regulators revoked Cruise’s license to operate in California. Shortly after, Cruise pulled its entire fleet off the road from all of its markets nationwide. Waymo is still allowed to operate limit-free in The City. The map shows every autonomous-vehicle crash in The City from Oct., 2014 to July, 2023, most of which are concentrated in The City’s northeast corridor. The Examiner is still awaiting data from August to the present. The map will be updated when we hear back.
