New York City has approved 13% of applicants seeking financial assistance in burying loved ones who died during the Covid-19 pandemic last year, city officials said
Wednesday.
Ms. Godby said at a New York City Council hearing that 63% of the denied applicants had missing paperwork. Others didn’t continue with the application process, she said. Some of the bodies have been stored for months because their families don’t have the means to bury them, or the medical examiner’s office has been unable to reach a next of kin, according to Dina Maniotis, executive deputy commissioner at the medical examiner’s office. Many of the bodies could end up on Hart Island, according to the medical examiner’s office.
