A shortage of Ozempic - a type 2 diabetes drug that is also used for weight loss will continue - after the Therapeutic Goods Administration pushed back the expected restock date. 7NEWS

At the time, the health regulator assured the drug would be returning to pharmacies, “gradually over the next few months”.was updated in early April to show the expected supply date for the drug had been pushed back to June 30.The TGA in its February announcement asked wholesalers to “distribute the limited initial supply of Ozempic as fairly as possible across Australia”.

Ozempic is a once-a-week injectable prescription medicine, designed to be used alongside diet and exercise, to improve blood-sugar levels and manage the risk of heart attacks and stroke. Its active ingredient, semaglutide, controls insulin secretion from the pancreas but has also been found to suppress appetite receptors in the brain.

However, over the past 12 months, the drug, which more than 125,000 diabetics in Australia depend on to survive, has been in an official shortage nationally. And studies suggest the drug may help people lose an average of 10 per cent to 15 per cent of their starting weight – a significantly larger amount than with previous medications.
