Both Machado and Profar hit 20th homers of the season as Padres secure series win
San Diego Padres left fielder Jurickson Profar and third baseman Manny Machado celebrate after Machado’s home run against the Minnesota Twins during the seventh inning at Petco Park on Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2024 in San Diego, CA. What a time to have friends like Manny Machado and Jurickson Profar.
This one required late heroics after Twins starter Bailey Ober retired 13 in a row after David Peralta’s second-inning single cashed in Jackson Merrill’s one-out double. This time, Donovan Solano got things started with a pinch-hit single off Steven Okert, Luis Arraez followed with a single and Profar hit his 20th homer of the season on 98 mph laser to left.
The first two were quality starts. The third was two outs of that distinction, but Pérez struck out a career-high eight batters last week in leaving a third team victory that began with him on the mound. Pérez retired the next three hitters to get out of the inning, but the first three hitters reached based in the fifth on two singles wrapped around his one walk in the game.
It was the last hitter that Pérez faced as Bryan Hoeing entered and retired Santana on a groundball to put the finishing touches on Pérez’s line.
