San Diego Padres third baseman Manny Machado candidly voiced his dissatisfaction with the team's offseason activity during a press conference at Padres Fan Fest. While acknowledging the team's inability to control departures of key players, Machado emphasized the Padres' continued pursuit of a World Series championship.
Manny Machado , known for his candidness, didn't shy away from expressing his feelings about the Padres ' offseason moves. During a press conference at Padres Fan Fest on Saturday, Machado was asked about his perspective on watching from the sidelines this winter. The 32-year-old third baseman made it clear that he wasn't content with the front office's activity thus far. 'At the end of the day, we gotta look at the guys that we have in here,' Machado said.
'Are we disappointed we haven't made any moves? Yeah. As a team, we kinda look up there and you're a little disappointed that we let some of the guys that were (part of the) core group here kind of go elsewhere. But at the end of the day, we can't control that, right?' The Padres were in the running for Japanese free agent pitcher Roki Sasaki, but he ultimately chose the Los Angeles Dodgers. Shortly after, San Diego lost All-Star closer Tanner Scott to the Dodgers as well, and All-Star outfielder Jurickson Profar signed with the Atlanta Braves. Veteran catcher Kyle Higashioka, left-handed pitcher Martín Pérez, and Gold Glove infielder Ha-Seong Kim also departed the team. The Padres had reached the brink of the NLCS last October, holding a 2-1 lead over the Dodgers in the NLDS. Just over three months later, the Dodgers secured another Commissioner's Trophy, and San Diego is reportedly considering trading more players to manage their payroll. Yet, Machado reassured fans that the Padres remain dedicated to reclaiming their place among the league's elite. 'We're gonna go and get ready for a long season,' Machado said. 'That won't change, our goal is still our goal and our goal is to win a championship and win the World Series. So come Spring Training time, with the guys that we have in that clubhouse, we're gonna go out there and we're gonna battle.' Machado and the rest of San Diego's position players will report to Spring Training in Arizona on February 17. If the Padres decide to trade ace Dylan Cease before Spring Training begins, he could potentially land with the New York Mets. Infielder Ha-Seong Kim might not be ready for Opening Day, but he is expected to join the Tampa Bay Rays once he recovers fully. With the Texas Rangers nearing the luxury tax threshold, teams have reportedly contacted them to inquire about the availability of outfielder Leody Taveras
