The city of Manila will buy its fifth coronavirus disease (COVID-19) serology testing machine to ramp up its mass testing efforts.
The machine which costs P6 million will be installed at Ospital ng Tondo and will increase the city’s testing capacity to 110,000 tests per month.
Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso made the announcement in a recent meeting with city health officials and hospital directors. The city currently has four serology testing machines installed at Gat Andres Bonifacio Memorial Medical Center, Ospital ng Sampaloc, Ospital ng Maynila, and Justice Jose Abad Santos General Hospital. They process blood samples to detect the presence of COVID-19 and can also help detect cancer, hepatitis, thyroid diseases, among other infectious diseases.
Those who test positive in the serology test must still undergo a confirmatory polymerase chain reaction test, that is hailed by the Department of Health as the gold standard.
