Fringe Theatre goes on the treadmill in Burnout Paradise while other shows offer high octane dance/theatre fusion, AI monsters and invitations into strangers’ loungerooms

This ingenious set-up from Monash University students sees participants split into teams, or “corporations”.
Collaborators Claire Bird, William Strom, Dominic Weintraub, Hugo Williams, and Ava Campbell will probably be exhausted by the end of the festival, but they’re in peak form now. And the treadmill choreography of the finale has everyone leaving on a high., there’s a high chance you’ll accidentally sing, or at the very least shimmy in your seat, to this high octane dance/theatre fusion.
It’s a disarming device, the wedding staged as participatory performance. And yes, I joined the entire room for a belly-dancing lesson to a cheesy pop megamix, critical distance be damned. Loveable Squishy, 11-year-old mystery-magnet, is the narrator of this interactive performance-cum-guided-playtime. She’s noticed unusual activity in the neighbourhood. Mysterious figures have been spotted, but who are they and what do they want? Working together, unravel the clues and assemble the answers.
It is incredibly moving as much as it’s a terrifying reminder. But there are many times Huttner-Koros takes us out of the show: by explaining why they created the show, what inspired it – it diminishes the sincerity. Ultimately, however, Huttner-Koros manages to hold our attention, as they move towards surprising turns while also implicating us inPantheons collide at Fringe’s Queen Vic Market pop-up hub.
