NEW YORK -- Five people, mostly children, have been hospitalized following a fire overnight in Manhattan. A 1 and 2-year-old are in critical condition after suffering smoke inhalation. The 1-year-old was also burned. Two 9-year-old girls and a 29-year-old woman are also being treated for smoke inhalation. The fire broke out shortly before 11 p.m. Wednesday at a six-story apartment building on Audubon Avenue between 175th and 176th streets in Washington Heights.
I look in the peephole, and I just see the fire and I just see smoke. So I go get my parents, I go get my brother, and I was like, 'We've got to go,'' neighbor Jeslie Malena said. 'As I was knocking on everybody's doors, the little girl screams... She was telling everybody around, she was telling me, 'Hey my brother's in there, you've got to save my brother, he's in there.' And I was like, 'You've got to come downstairs with me.
