Ineos founder and Man United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is set to make a significant round of redundancies at Old Trafford as part of cost-cutting measures
For almost all of those 1,100 employees working at Manchester United, this is a dream job. Many of them are United fans, feeling a close association with the football club and striding into Old Trafford every day with a spring in their step. For so many to be told they will be losing those jobs is painful and marks a sad day.
Cost-cutting has been on the cards since Ineos took over. They have gone through the books with a fine tooth comb and found various ways they can save money. Shedding a quarter of the staff is just another example. It looks ruthless and there is a degree of that. It was Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s dream to own the club and he will be aware of what it means to work there for people. Losing any job in the current climate is worrying.
This is part of his plan to turn United around but it would be nice to hear from him at some point on why he felt he had to make these decisions. He has been vocal in recent weeks and this is a huge issue both for staff at the club and for United fans. The desire to cut costs is understandable. United have the biggest workforce in the Premier League, but then they never tire of telling anyone who will listen they are the biggest club in the world either.
