Brian O'Connor, 38, is recovering from severe injuries sustained when a tree fell on him and his mother in a tent during the Nov. 19 bomb cyclone in Lynnwood. His mother, Debbie O'Connor, 66, was killed in the incident. Brian, who is autistic, managed to escape and seek help on his own.

An image of 38-year-old Brian O'Connor, who was badly injured after a tree fell on him and his mom during the bomb cyclone that occurred on Nov. 19.

Sixty-six-year-old Debbie O’Connor was killed, and her 38-year-old son, Brian, who is autistic, had his spine crushed by a tree on Nov. 19, according to family members. “It’s amazing, it’s a miracle, he’s a strong young man,” Kerry O’Connor, Brian’s aunt, told KOMO News. “In the middle of the night, he heard branches cracking and sat up, and that's when the tree fell, so we don't really know how he survived.”“He only could see her hand from underneath the tree, and so she was crushed immediately,” Kerry O’Connor said.

“He was able to cut himself out of the tent and walk to the road and flag down help, and then he collapsed,” Kerry O’Connor said. “When paramedics got there, he was actually able to take them back to the scene, so it’s kind of miraculous he could walk with this crushed spine.”The family said Brian had to have two spinal surgeries to place rods in his spine but was not paralyzed and can walk. Even doctors were amazed at Brian’s survival, according to his family.
