A man found to have a dead fish inside his rectum told health workers it got inside his body after he accidentally sat on it.
The patient, 30, had sought medical attention at Zhaoqing First People’s Hospital in Guangdong, China, on June 3. He underwent a series of CT and X-ray scans which revealed a Mozambique tilapia, a freshwater fish, inside his body. He told health workers he had intense abdominal pain which lasted over an hour. When a nurse questioned how the fish ended up in his body, he told them he accidentally sat on it, causing it to go inside his anus.Medics removed the fish from the man’s body during surgery At first medics tried to remove the fish through an emergency endoscopy but found it was too big. Surgeons then decided to open up his abdomen after discovering the animal’s spiny fins had caused ruptures in his large intestines.
The specimen was then retrieved from the man’s bowels, reportedly causing those present in the operating theatre to gag due to its smell. It is not clear whether the fish was alive when inserted into the man’s body The male patient is now believed to be recovering from the surgery. It is not clear whether the tilapia was dead or alive at the time of insertion.
