A Montgomery man who admitted to being in the vicinity of the deadly mass shooting at Tuskegee University is now facing a federal charge but denies firing any shots.

The U.S. Justice Department has charged Jeremiah Williams, 20, with illegal possession of a machine gun conversion device, commonly known as a Glock switch.- Jaquez Myrick- was arrested on. Like Williams, Myrick is also from Montgomery and is also accused of having the illegal weapon but not firing it.

When investigators went to Williams’ Montgomery home with a search warrant, the report states he admitted being there but denies firing any shots. He allegedly admitted he and the other two people in the car were all armed, and that he had an AR-style pistol. He said he does not know if someone discharged a firearm from the vehicle. The filing states that when Williams was told that some witnesses claimed the first shots fired came from his vehicle, he said said he did not fire. He claimed he could not say if anyone else in the car fired because he was watching the road while driving.

At his home, investigators say they found the pistol and that it had been illegally modified, which is what he is charged with.Williams made his initial appearance in federal court Friday and will remain in custody pending a detention hearing next week, according to the Justice Department.
