Chris Lewis fell 500ft rescuing two campers after one began to experience chest pains
A mountain rescue volunteer who was seriously injured after trying to help campers who broke lockdown rules has died.
The two campers, from Liverpool and Leicester, had broken travel restrictions brought in at the height of the covid pandemic, and called for help when one of them began experiencing chest pains. Both were fined £200.Chris was admitted to Furness General Hospital in Barrow on September 2 of this year with a chest infection and pneumonia and died two days later.
Writing on the Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team Facebook page, a spokesperson said: "Patterdale MRT, and the wider mountain rescue community are devastated to hear about the passing of Chris Lewis, team member and Trustee. Other people also paid tribute to Chris, one person said: "The word 'tragedy' hardly covers it. What a man who kept his positivity in the face of extreme circumstances. I can only imagine how his family feel, and yourselves in the MR community too. Thoughts are with you all."
