Souther was scheduled to play some shows with Karla Bonoff this fall.
Souther was born in Detroit, Michigan, but grew up in Texas. He moved to Los Angeles, California, in the 1960s and met Glenn Frey, one of the founding members of the Eagles. They briefly were in a band together, Longbranch Pennywhistle, which was the beginning of a long creative collaboration. He had a hand in co-writing some of the Eagles’ most popular songs, such as “Best of My Love,” “James Dean,” “New Kid in Town,” “Heartache Tonight, and “Doolin-Dalton.” He also co-wrote “Heart of the Matter,” a solo hit for Eagles drummer Don Henley.He also wrote or co-wrote songs for James Taylor and Bonnie Raitt, and sang on recordings by Henley, Christopher Cross, Dan Fogelberg and Roy Orbison. He also had success as a solo artist, with his biggest hit, “You’re Only Lonely,” reaching No.
