Man who fell in 'ferocious' River Trent saved by non-swimmer workman

Pete Etchell says he tumbled down a 20ft bank on the River Trent before being hauled to safety.

A man who fell into a river in North Lincolnshire has praised two workmen who came to his rescue - despite one being a non-swimmer.

His wife Cath flagged down the workmen who sprang into action and hauled Mr Etchell to safety with ropes.He told the BBC: "If they had not, it would have been a very different outcome." The bank was too slippery to climb back up and because he suffers from Dupuytren's contracture, which affects a person's ability to grip, he could not hold on to anything.She frantically alerted two broadband engineers on the street who were on their lunch break.

They used some rope from their van to tie around Mr Etchell then hauled him up the bank, with the help of Mrs Etchell and a neighbour.
