Man who drove alleged murderers phoned 'Fringy' day after Thomas Campbell death, jury told

A man who allegedly drove three men to brutally attack Thomas Campbell told jurors he spoke to one of them he nicknamed ‘Fringy’ a day after the attack. Karl Murphy, 50, said he spoke to John Belfield, 28, after thinking he had taken his VW Caddy after the attack on the 38-year-old at his home in Mossley.

“He came to the house, he was not with anybody. He asked if I could give him a lift into Stalybridge, him and a couple of friends were going to meet some bird,” he told jurors. The following day, July 3, he said he awoke to find the keys to his VW Caddy van were missing. He said he made himself a ‘brew’ before calling Mr Belfield, who he had stored under the name ‘Fringy’ in his phone due to a dodgy hair transplant. Mr Murphy said he called him because he was the last person he gave a lift to.

He denied knowing any of the defendants and denied knowing Mr Campbell. Of his murder, he said it was ‘disgusting’.
