Bruno Fernandes was a transformative signing for Man Utd in January 2020 and Erik ten Hag will hope Rasmus Hojlund can make a similar impact.
In among the wreckage of Manchester United's worst start to a season in 37 years, there is one beacon of hope shining brightly for Erik ten Hag, a focal point for those hopeful that things will soon start to turn.
It was an entrance and a celebration befitting a messiah and that is what he needs to be for Ten Hag and United. He, more than anyone else, had every right to be furious with the slack defending that gifted Galatasaray victory in the Champions League. What should have been Hojlund's breakthrough night became another inquest into United's woeful start to the campaign.
"I think he is a different character in our squad and that makes it really exciting," he said. "The balance in my squad is very good and already we noticed this week when he came in a different spirit is coming up. He gives that energy and also the players get energy from it. It is very good." United hoped Hojlund would be this central to their season when they spent £72million on signing him from Atalanta this summer, but there was an acceptance he was still learning his trade, with just one full season in Serie A, as well as 32 games for FC Copenhagen and 21 for Sturm Graz.
For United to turn this season around and give Hojlund the platform to excel regularly plenty needs to change. Conceding 18 goals in 10 games is clearly a barrier to success.
