Man United want to strengthen their midfield options before the end of this summer's transfer window - and it is vital they sign one with defensive expertise.
Having added a central defender and a striker to their ranks so far this summer, focus has now switched to bolstering the midfield for Manchester United.
United, more often than not, relied on the brilliance of Kobbie Mainoo in the engine room last season, with the youngster producing a catalogue of eye-catching performances. As a result, he is guaranteed to be a regular starter in midfield alongside Bruno Fernandes this term. With a world-class battering ram required, Mainoo is unlikely to get a midfielder of the profile of Reds legend Paul Scholes, who was renowned for his passing ability and hunger to get forward and score goals. Mainoo identified Scholes as his dream midfield partner earlier this year.
Joking that there would not be an awful lot of defending between the two of them, Mainoo clearly knows United cannot add a player of similar mould to Scholes this summer. They need a defensive specialist who will sit deep, win tackles, protect the back four and do the dirty side of the game.
