The international break is in full swing and Man Utd might benefit from some of their players getting that exposure this season.
International breaks are usually a time for managers to cross their fingers and hope their players return to club duty without injury, it is a case of getting through the break and going again with your squad still intact.
But international football isn’t without its uses for United, especially this season. It will act as a stage for two players in particular who could have left last summer and will be likely candidates to be sold in 2024.Harry Maguire and Scott McTominay might find their minutes for United are reduced further this season. The centre-back has dropped below Victor Lindelof in the pecking order for Ten Hag and McTominay now faces competition from Sofyan Amrabat and Kobbie Mainoo.
McTominay has been deployed as a holding midfielder for United, but he is probably at his best in a box-to-box role. He’s occasionally shown his prowess around the opposition’s penalty area for his club, but he’s been unleashed for Scotland by Steve Clarke and looks a different player. If he maintains this form then his performances for his country alone might keep his value high ahead of next summer.
It is Maguire who needs those England games to maintain match fitness and remind people what he can do, even if his status as some kind of pantomime villain has spread to followers of a national team he has never let down.
