A North Carolina man followed his wife's boyfriend to South Carolina, resulting in a violent parking lot fight where a baseball bat was used, leading to arrests and charges including child neglect.
Two men have been arrested following a violent confrontation that began with one man tracking his wife's boyfriend across state lines and culminated in a physical altercation at a grocery store parking lot.
The incident occurred on the afternoon of Sunday, May 24. According to a police report, Jett, 60, took his three children with him from North Carolina to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where he confronted McGill, 59, regarding his relationship with Jett's wife outside a Food Lion grocery store on 38th Avenue North around 5:45 p.m. Jett initially left a note on McGill's windshield before allegedly waiting for McGill to exit the store.
Witnesses reported that as McGill began loading groceries into his car, Jett ran toward him. An argument ensued, after which Jett allegedly punched McGill in the head. The two men fought briefly before separating. McGill then retrieved a metal baseball bat from his vehicle and struck Jett repeatedly on the head and upper body until Jett fell to the ground.
Multiple witness videos documented the assault, with one witness describing the sound of the bat striking Jett as a "ping, ping, ping.
" A bystander intervened and took the bat from McGill, but according to an affidavit, McGill re-engaged and continued attacking Jett until police arrived. Jett has been charged with one count of assault and battery in the third degree and three counts of unlawful neglect of a child. McGill is currently in custody at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center on a $300,000 bond. Jett was booked in the Myrtle Beach Jail and has since been released.
It is not known if either man has entered a plea. The Myrtle Beach Police Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment. This case underscores the dangers of vigilante justice and the profound impact of domestic disputes on children and bystanders
