A man is dead following an officer-involved shooting Sunday morning in D.C., according to the Metropolitan Police Department Police Chief Pamela Smith.

According to Smith, the shooting occurred at the McDonald's in the 2500 block of Marion Barry Avenue SE.Police were initially called to the scene around 5:30 a.m. for a report of a crash, she said. When officers arrived, they saw a vehicle had crashed into the McDonald's, causing some damage. The driver of the vehicle was still inside the car, but was unresponsive, Smith said. She said he had a gun in his lap. That's when officers drew their guns and commanded the man to drop his weapon. But Smith said, the man instead grabbed the officer's service weapon.DC Fire & EMS were already on the scene and tried to save the man's life, but he was pronounced dead on the scene.Smith said thankfully none of her officers were injured.

The officers did turn on their body-worn cameras during the incident. That video will now be reviewed as a part of the investigation. The officers were not injured, but have since been put on administrative leave as a part of department policy.
