A Georgia man was sentenced to 475 years in prison for operating a dog fighting ring, marking the longest known sentence for such a crime. Authorities discovered 107 dogs on the defendant's property, showing signs of severe abuse and neglect. Evidence linked the defendant to the illegal fighting operation, including breeding equipment, fighting tools, and documents connecting him to other known dog fighters.

The case began in 2022 when an Amazon delivery worker alerted authorities about several dogs chained with heavy chains on Vincent Lemark Burrell's property in Dallas, Georgia, approximately 30 miles west of Atlanta. On November 8, 2022, a search warrant was executed by Prosecutor Jessica K. Rock, Paulding County sheriff's deputies, and local marshals.

During the search, authorities discovered 107 dogs exhibiting signs of severe abuse, including being underweight, lacking proper food, water, and shelter, and many restrained with logging chains in close proximity, a tactic known to intensify dog aggression. Burrell's arrest followed immediately, based on accusations of orchestrating dog fights and animal cruelty. The sheriff's office reported finding another group of dogs in the basement, living amidst urine and feces. Prosecutors obtained evidence linking Burrell to dog fighting activities, including a treadmill designed for dogs, a breeding stand, a break stick used to pry open a dog's jaws during a fight, documents connected to other known dog fighters, a first-aid kit for injured dogs, veterinary-only medication, and sales contracts for dogs. A veterinarian who examined the dogs found some with missing teeth and scars consistent with fighting. The county seized the dogs under a federal warrant, and they were ultimately taken in by Friends of the Forlorn Animal Rescue, a non-profit organization. Among the rescued dogs was Baby Shark, an 8-week-old puppy at the time. Authorities stated that Baby Shark was intended for illegal fighting. Prosecutor Rock alleged that Burrell was breeding dogs specifically for dog fighting, and Baby Shark would have been forced into that life had she not been rescued. Superior Court Judge Dean C. Bucci sentenced Burrell to 475 years based on his conviction by a jury on 93 counts of dog fighting and 10 counts of cruelty to animals
