A New Jersey man was sentenced to prison after he killed a student pilot in a plane crash in 2022, with investigators saying the man did not have the proper certification to fly the plane in the first place.
Philip McPherson II, 37, of Riverside, New Jersey, is set to serve six and a half years in prison, as well as pay nearly $30,000 in fines and restitution, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. The fatal crash occurred Sept. 28, 2022, when McPherson crashed a plane that had just taken off from Allentown, Pennsylvania. The student pilot, 49-year-old Keith Kozel, died in the crash.
McPherson said that he had two prior plane crashes and failed his reexamination for his pilot's certificate in September 2021. He voluntarily surrendered his certificate Oct. 7, 2021, according to investigators. McPherson pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, obstruction of an administrative proceeding, and 40 counts of serving as an airman without a certificate. UPMC is set to lay off around 200 employees across its system, a company spokesperson confirmed to CBS 21.
