A Texas man's DWI charge was dismissed when a blood test revealed no signs of intoxication despite initial observations suggesting impairment. The man attributed the incident to a diabetic episode.
A man from Deer Park , Stevin Burrows, who claims to have been sober for years, was charged with driving while intoxicated ( DWI ) back in October. Burrows maintains that he was experiencing a diabetic episode and was not under the influence of any substances. Despite his claims, police officers who encountered him during the incident observed signs indicative of intoxication, including during an eye test conducted by a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE).
However, Burrows' blood test came back clean, leading to the dismissal of his charges on January 8th.The incident occurred while Burrows was driving to watch his granddaughter's softball game. He stated that he had forgotten to take his Type 2 diabetes medication, causing him to feel dizzy, confused, and nauseous. This resulted in him inadvertently driving on the wrong side of the road, catching the attention of a police officer. Burrows claims that the officer's initial suspicion stemmed from his driver's license check. Burrows has a history of legal troubles, including several possession charges, but his last conviction was in 2010. He attributes his sobriety to around that same time. He expressed his frustration at being stereotyped, stating that he takes responsibility for his past actions but dislikes the assumption that he is currently engaging in illegal activities. The dismissal of his charges was based on a lack of conclusive evidence. Burrows also obtained a letter from his primary care provider confirming his medical conditions, including diabetes and a previous stroke, and asserting that he does not consume alcohol or recreational drugs. Burrows now advocates for awareness and preparedness, urging others to be mindful of their surroundings and manage their medical conditions effectively to avoid similar situations
