Three years after a man was gunned down in his car in southeast Montgomery, one of the two people arrested is heading to prison.
Court records show Marquis Lequan Phillips, 26, has pleaded guilty to intentional murder, a lesser charge than his indictment of capital murder. Circuit Judge Jimmy Pool sentenced Phillips to life in prison.
The guilty plea was for the shooting death of 20-year-old Dequan Johnson on Feb. 16, 2021. Court records indicate Johnson was in a car at Home Inn and Suites on Express Drive when Phillips and another man shot into the car multiple times while robbing him. Johnson died in the car, which thenInvestigators say Phillips and his co-defendant, J’Hance Tramatez Gillum, both ran away. Gillum was arrested that night, while Phillips was caught after a car chase the next morning.
“Marquis Phillips deserves to spend the rest of his life in prison for murdering Dequan Johnson in cold blood. However, it’s disheartening to know that we keep losing so many of our young people to these senseless murders. The gun violence that plagues our community is often committed by young men like Marquis Phillips who pointlessly throw their entire futures away because they don’t stop to think before they act,” said Montgomery County District Attorney Daryl Bailey.
