ELKTON, Md. - from the Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshall, firefighters responded to a Walmart location at around 7 p.m. on April 29 after a fire was reported inside the store.
Although the fire was extinguished within minutes of the fire department's arrival, the circumstances surrounding the blaze remained under investigation. Investigators soon obtained video that showed a man wearing a surgical mask entering the store with a backpack shortly before the fire began.
The video reportedly showed the suspect using a can of camping fuel and "several" boxes of fireworks to set and stoke a fire in a shopping cart, which he pushed into the children's clothing section of the store.
"As the fire grew, fireworks began to discharge, and as customers and staff exited the store, the man broke into the jewelry counter and stole multiple pieces of jewelry, valued at nearly $10,000," the release read. Although the fire only caused roughly $5,000 in direct damages, the inventory that was lost due to "smoke, soot, and subsequent remediation efforts" totaled a whopping $10 million, according to Walmart.
Police identified the suspect as 36-year-old Anthony Rhodes. Investigators said that Rhodes' choice to wear a Jefferson University Baseball shirt led to his identification, but authorities also noted that Rhodes had no connection to the university nor its baseball team. Ohio Governor Mike DeWine ordered flags on all public buildings and grounds throughout the state of Ohio to be lowered to half staff on May 15.
