FILE - A tree fell onto a man's vehicle in San Mateo County on Tuesday, killing him, amid high winds in the region, officials said. The California Highway Patrol said it received a report of the fallen tree on Alpine Road, west of Interstate 280, in Portola, at 1:34 p.m. At the scene, officers found that a tree had toppled onto a white van and an individual was trapped inside, David LaRock, a CHP spokesperson, told SFGATE.
Crews removed debris to get to the male driver, who was pronounced dead at the scene, LaRock said. There were no other individuals in the van. LaRock said the preliminary investigation revealed that the vehicle was traveling east on Alpine Road and the tree was standing on the south side of the road before it was knocked across all lanes of the road, landing on the vehicle.
There are several unrelated trees down along Alpine Road, and a section of the road near 280 was closed as of 3 p.m. LaRock said it's unknown when the road will reopen.
