A man died Monday evening after a domestic-violence call turned into a shootout with law-enforcement officers, the Wise County Sheriff’s Office said.
Shortly after 7 p.m., Wise County sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of domestic violence in the 100 block of Honeysuckle Road near Paradise, about 35 miles northwest of Fort Worth, the department said Tuesday.Wise County Sheriff Lane Akin said two deputies heard a gunshot inside the home while they were at the front door. Their report of a shooting prompted two Boyd police officers to respond.
Officers administered aid to Lander until medical crews arrived, the sheriff’s office said. Lander died at a Fort Worth hospital from multiple gunshot wounds, according to the Tarrant County medical examiner’s office. Akin said two women escaped the house before the shooting and were uninjured. Their relationships to Lander were unclear. Akin said he was not aware of any mental health-related calls associated with the address.
The Texas Rangers will conduct an independent investigation of the shooting. Akin said body-camera footage of the incident will be released, but the timing will depend on the investigation. The sheriff’s deputy who fired their weapon, whose name was not released, has been a full-time employee of the sheriff’s office for less than a year. They will be given paid time-off, but the leave would not be “mandated,” Akin said.
