OVERNIGHT: One person was killed in a rollover crash with an on-duty Aurora police officer Saturday night, according to the police department.
The officer, who was hired in February 2022, was seriously injured. The other driver died after he was taken to a hospital. Neither have been publicly identified.
The news release does not say how the crash unfolded at the intersection, except to note that the officer’s vehicle rolled and came to rest on its roof, trapping the officer inside. Aurora police Sgt. Faith Goodrich said Sunday she could not release additional details because the case has been handed over to the Colorado State Patrol for investigation.
A spokesperson for the Colorado State Patrol did not immediately return a request for comment Sunday, and it was not clear how the two vehicles crashed into each other or how fast the officer or other driver were going when the crash happened. In addition to the Colorado State Patrol investigation, the Aurora police department will also conduct an internal affairs investigation.
