One victim sustained 15 stab wounds to his body after being attacked outside a pub, the second victim was stabbed once in the chest
A man who launched two separate knife attacks upon two strangers in the centre of Belfast within minutes of each other was handed a sentence totalling 13-and-a-half years today.
The first incident occurred outside Pug Ugly's pub on Bedford Street. A couple were standing outside the pub when McOwen walked past them and made a comment to the woman about what he would like to do to her. During this second attack, McOwen deliberately bumped into the other man then offered him 'fair digs'. Despite moving away from McOwen, this male was then stabbed once in the chest with a knife which the defendant produced from the waistband of his tracksuit bottoms.
In a Victim Impact Statement, this injured party spoke of both the physical and psychological impact the knife attack has had upon him. Meanwhile, the second stabbing victim was assisted by members of the public until medics arrived and he was treated for a single stab wound to his chest. He later pleaded guilty to two counts of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and to a charge of possessing a bladed article in a public place.
