33-year-old man experiencing mental health crisis shot, killed by police officer in Sandy
The shooting occurred at around 1 a.m. at 11640 South 1020 East. The officer was looking for a man who was reportedly experiencing a mental health episode and possibly suicidal.
"Our officer located the individual walking and at some point, the individual presented a threat that resulted in our officer discharging his firearm," the Sandy Police Department wrote in a press release.The officer was not injured. The shooting is being investigated under the Salt Lake County officer-involved critical incident protocol, and the officer has been placed on paid administrative leave.
