Stevie Coleman, 36, pleaded guilty Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2025, to felony murder for the 2020 death of 23-year-old Stephanie Hale.A Montgomery man has been sentenced to prison for the shooting death of his girlfriend who was caught in the crossfire of a drug-fueled shootout.
Stevie Coleman, 36, pleaded guilty Wednesday to felony murder for the 2020 death of 23-year-old Stephanie Hale. The plea agreement called for Coleman to serve 30 years, said Montgomery County District Attorney Azzie Oliver.Oliver said Coleman confronted a man in the 5600 block of Carmichael Road who he said owed him money for drugs. Coleman shot the man in the leg and then ran in front of the car belonging to his girlfriend, Hale, who was sitting in the passenger’s seat. Coleman, Oliver said, used Hale’s vehicle as a shield and began shooting at a third person who fired back at Coleman.“Stephanie Hale’s loved ones are sadly among the multitude of families in our community who are suffering because of these senseless murders,” Oliver said. “Gun violence in Montgomery is out of hand,” the district attorney said. “Innocent people are losing their lives because of the careless and thoughtless actions of others.” Oliver said she and her team of prosecutors and investigators will use every tool and resource available to prosecute the cases to the fullest extent of the law. “However,” she said, “our community must work collaboratively and collectively to come up with solutions to address this ongoing crisis.”Carol Robinson is a senior reporter for AL.com, covering crime, public safety and breaking news in more than 30 Alabama counties.
